Next, we visited the birth place of St. Anthony which, not surprisingly, was of real interest to Anthony.
On our way up the steep hill to the Castle, we stopped at a small cool little park that had good views of Lisbon.
We walked out of the park and treked up to the castelo de sao jorge on top of a hill - a little out of shape from the honeymoon! Once we got up to the castle, we were glad we fought through the pain as the views were great.
After the castle, we decided to get on a "hop on hop off" bus to get a good overall tour of the city.
We passed a huge bull fighting complex.
As well as a historically significant arch (we forgot why).
The city planners of European cities did a great job (in our humble opinion) in designing cities with plenty of open spaces and parks. One of the parks that we liked a lot in Lisbon was very well manicured and cool (Parque Eduardo VII).
We jumped off the bus at a point where there was another nice park and a castle on the shore (the Torre de Belem).
Finally, the Saturday sight seeing needed to end the same way it began - Anthony out front of a church. This time the Basillica de Estrela.
Can you guess who is in this grave? Hint: A famous portugese explorer who was the first to discover the route from Europe to India.
The next day we decided to jump in a car and take a tour of the Lisbon coast which was supposed to be very charming. It was a great sight seeing tour. Nice castles, parks, fishing villages, etc. A few pictures from the tour of Cascais and Sintra:
Along the way, we went to Cabo Da Roca which is the western most point in Europe. We could almost catch a glimpse of the US from here.
As we made our way along the coastal area surrounding Lisbon we passed countless beaches. They were packed full of people - each one.
Sunday afternoon came and after a nice ice cream cone in Cascais, it was time to hop on the plane and head back to London.
